LEADING VOLUNTEERS -- TIPS AND TRICKS
ASK, DON'T ORDER: Volunteers require nurturing, attention and plenty of thank you's to keep them coming back; and this is not the military. Ask nicely.
SET OBJECTIVES: Give folks the who, what and when (and perhaps "why") of what you want done. Targets; timelines; and due dates.
LIST EXPECTATIONS: If it makes you smile, WRITE an expectation to achieve it; if it makes you frown, WRITE an expectation to avoid it.
INSPIRE AND MOTIVATE: Be the light! Be the optimist; the one to look up to; the one with words of encouragement.
HAVE A VISION: Know where you want to go and share that vision with others.
DON'T JUST STAND THERE: Make stuff happen; say something; when you see an issue or something going wrong, get on top of it and LEAD.
ALWAYS SAY THANK YOU: A leader of volunteers cannot do this often enough (and FEED the troops whenever you can as a special way of saying thanks).
KEEP TROOPS PRODUCTIVE: Give everyone a real job and make sure they know what it is; help them achieve it.
LEARN TO FACILITATE MEETINGS AND ISSUES: Leading volunteers means INSPIRING, MOTIVATING and FACILITATING.
PART OF LEADERSHIP IS RESOLVING CONFLICT.
